SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Each Term Means
Three disciplines now govern search visibility. Understanding the distinction between them is the starting point for a complete strategy.

How LLMs Find and Use Your Content
Large Language Models like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity operate through two primary mechanisms. If your content ranks well in Google for the queries an LLM is likely to generate, your content will be retrieved and potentially cited by the LLM. This is why traditional SEO remains the foundation of GEO.
- →Training data: Foundational knowledge baked into the model during training. Content published, widely linked to, and frequently cited before the training cutoff date is embedded in the model's knowledge.
- →RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): When a user asks a question requiring current information, the LLM generates search queries, retrieves relevant web pages, and uses that content to formulate its response.
- →Query fan-out: The LLM fans out from the original question into multiple related searches. Ranking for those related queries is how your content gets retrieved.
Practical GEO and AEO Strategies
The shift to AI-powered search favors content that is structured as direct answers. Users now type conversational queries. 'Best marketing agency near Albany NY' is being replaced by 'What is the best marketing agency for a small business in the Capital Region of New York?'
- →Structure content as direct answers: Every major section should open with a clear, concise answer to the question implied by the heading. The direct answer must come first. Elaboration follows.

- →Establish topical authority: A website with twenty well-researched articles on a topic is more likely to be cited as an authority than one with a single article. Comprehensive topical coverage is both an SEO and GEO strategy.
- →Earn citations from high-authority sources: Digital PR, press coverage, and guest contributions on authoritative publications create the citation loop that LLMs trust.
- →Featured snippet optimization: Paragraph snippets are 40–60 words. List snippets use numbered or bulleted lists. Table snippets use structured data. Content earning featured snippets is highly likely to be cited in AI Overviews.
- →YouTube and video content: YouTube is one of the most-cited sources in AI search responses. Video content on the same topics as written content extends your presence into a channel AI systems actively retrieve from.

The LLMs.txt File: What It Is and What It Is Not
A relatively new GEO concept is the llms.txt file, a plain-text file placed in the root of a website that provides a structured summary of the site's content for LLMs. Google has explicitly stated it does not use llms.txt files. For non-Google AI systems like Perplexity, it may provide a marginal benefit. It is worth implementing as a low-effort signal, but it is not a significant GEO tactic for Google-based visibility.
Measuring SEO and GEO Performance
SEO and GEO are not set-and-forget disciplines. They require ongoing measurement, analysis, and iteration. The discipline is a cycle: research, create, publish, measure, refine, repeat.
